My ways of using Edu Blogs in EFL classroom

Teaching:

I always hope that I can teach adults working during weekdays and taking my class at night or at weekends. They have basic knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar; and learning skills. They also have a well-established cognitive schema about the politics, economics, and other cultural aspects in this world. They learn English so as to seek a better accomplish in their career and life. All in all, they may have more motivation and autonomy, but less energy and time to study and finish my assignment. Their different jobs also add other diversity elements in this classroom. These diversities are vital to the success of teaching and learning that they should not be overlooked but hard for teacher to take into consider every of them.

However, with the help of Internet, I can easily manage the class anywhere and anytime. So do those students. Instead of going to a certain place in a certain time, working students may enjoy the ease and privacy learning at home or at work. Compare to the real classroom, students have way more choice of resources. Though posting blogs requires ones' writing skills, students can also benefit from reading others' blogs and listening and watching real-life videos and funny flash. As to speaking, I also found several sites about exchange language around the world. Students can also talk to each other or as a whole class on line through skype.

There are more sources and information I want to present in my class blog in the future. As I said in my first post, this is my first time that relate blog with learning and teaching. And, of course, I like it! and I think, other students also enjoy the adventure in the cyber space. Those link rolls in each site are like chains connect one and the other. If you have time and your eyes won't complain, you will spend a whole day in front of your laptop study, without feeling bored.

Zheng,

It sounds as if you are planning on doing online teaching. Distance learning courses have a lot to offer for busy, working adults, don't you think.

As you have mentioned even speaking skills can be practiced by using tools like Skype with/without a webcam. Another free, Internet tool you might like to check out is
http://www.wiziq.com/ . This site allows you to have an online white board in addition to other features. Good luck with you future online teaching.

Hey, Zhen, how are you? Didn't talk to you for the whole summer. Did you have a nice time during the vocation? I bet you did:)

I am so happy for you that you have such a clear career plan. And the idea you mentioned "Instead of going to a certain place in a certain time, working students may enjoy the ease and privacy learning at home or at work."is really good. When I was working in China, the language institution I was in had almost the same slogan, you know, stay at home and learn native-like English. Internet really makes it come true. I agree with you that responding to the posts is a practice of writing, and reading others' comments is another way to learn.

Zheng,

I agree that some students could spend all day in front of a computer and not get bored. However, do you think that there is a point where technology should take a backseat? How far should it go? Should students have to take a break? What do you think that that would do for their learning experience if they had to read a book the old fashioned way, as opposed to online? Just something to think about :-)

The blog looks great!

To Julie,
I'm glad that you like my blog. As to your questions, here is my thoughts. People nowadays live in two worlds, one is real, the other is virtual. People have shown a lot concern about the virtual world has played a larger role in real people's lives and has great impact over the real world. However, the thing is, it will never take the place of the real world. SO, in this sense, www. is only one of components that constitute our daily lives, one branch among a few grow from the tree trunk.
I read daily, newspaper, novels, magzines. Some of them are paper version. Some are digital. When I was first trying to read things on screen, I felt awkward. But the reading materail was too much to print out. Anyway, I had to read it with my laptop. Since then, I got used to read digital readings.
Vice versa, if people can read from computer, they can read the old-fashion paper ones, since reading ability won'tbe affected.

I like your blog and the colorful font, your blog brightens my mood and eyes!
Compared with teaching adults in the future,I may prefer to teach teenagers and kids, because I won't feel any pressure. I also love to use internet resources in my future teaching, since using blogs and discussion board have been proved to be very good helpers. The only existing problem may be how to prevent students abusing the internet. Anyway, it has been a controversial issue for a long time. Hope we could make it!
